13, 15 or 16 Line Quran: Which One Should You Buy?
15 line, 16 line or 13 line Quran? Learn the difference, who each one suits (hifz, tilawat, elders) and how to pick the right Quran Pak in Pakistan.
Walk into any maktaba in Pakistan and ask for a Quran Pak, and the first question you'll hear is: "Kitni line wala chahiye?" 13 line, 15 line or 16 line. If you've never thought about it, the choice can feel confusing.
The good news is simple. The text of the Quran is exactly the same in all three. Every ayah, every word and every letter is identical. Only the page layout changes: how many lines fit on a page and where each page ends. That layout matters for reading comfort, for hifz, and for who the Quran is for.
Here's a plain guide to help you pick the right 15 line Quran, 16 line Quran or 13 line Quran for yourself or your family.
The quick answer
| 13 line | 15 line | 16 line | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pages (full Quran) | about 848 | about 610 | about 548 |
| Letters, at the same page size | Largest | Medium | Smallest |
| Hafizi layout (every page ends on a complete ayah) | No | Yes | No |
| Best for | Elders, weak eyesight, children starting nazra | Hifz students and huffaz | Daily tilawat and a family copy |
All three are printed in the IndoPak script, the bold, clear style taught in Pakistani masjids and madrasas. The 610 and 548 page counts are for the 15 and 16 line IndoPak layouts on Quran.com; the 848 is Taj Company's 13 line edition. Printed editions can differ by a page or two.
What does "line" mean in a Quran?
It is simply the number of lines of Arabic text on each page. More lines on a page means fewer pages in total; fewer lines means a thicker Quran. If two copies are the same size, the one with fewer lines has bigger letters.
What is a Hafizi Quran?
A Hafizi Quran is laid out so that every page ends at the end of an ayah, never halfway through one. This helps huffaz remember each page as a picture, which is why madrasas are strict about which copy a student uses.
Only the 15 line Quran comes in this Hafizi layout, so if you are buying for hifz, the line count settles it: choose 15 line.
Some publishers, including Taj Company, also print "Hafizi" on their 13 and 16 line editions. There it refers to the IndoPak Hafizi style of lettering, not this page layout. For hifz, what matters is the 15 line layout.
Size and weight depend on the edition, not the line count
A 16 line Quran is not always the lightest. Page size matters more than line count. In our own range, a large 16 line copy (27 × 19 cm) weighs about 1.3 kg, a standard 13 line copy (19 × 15 cm) about 0.77 kg, and a standard 15 line Hafizi copy (19.5 × 13 cm) about 0.58 kg. Check the size and weight on each product page before you choose.
15 line Quran: the Hafizi Quran for hifz
The 15 line Quran is the Hafizi layout, made for memorising. It runs to about 610 pages, and because every page ends on a complete ayah, a student can learn page by page and "see" each page in their mind during dohrai (revision).
Choose a 15 line Quran if:
- your child is starting hifz, or is already a hafiz
- you are doing your own hifz or revising for taraweeh
- you want a balance between letter size and the size of the Quran
One important tip: once a student starts hifz on one copy, they should stay on it. Switching to a 16 line copy, or even a different 15 line edition, halfway through can confuse their page memory. Ask the ustad or qari sahab which edition the madrasa uses before you buy.
Our 15 line range includes a plain Hafizi copy, a colour-coded tajweed copy and a pocket size for carrying to the masjid:
15 line IndoPak or 15 line Madani: not the same Quran layout
You may also come across a 15 line Quran with thinner, Arabic-style letters. That is usually the Madani (Uthmani script) mushaf, printed in Madinah and common in the Gulf. It also has 15 lines a page but runs to about 604 pages, in a different script from the IndoPak copies above (Quran.com page layouts).
The two are not interchangeable for hifz: the letters look different and the pages break in different places. If the madrasa uses IndoPak, buy IndoPak. When in doubt, take a photo of the student's current copy to the shop, or send it to us.
16 line Quran: a compact everyday Quran
With about 548 pages, the 16 line Quran has the fewest pages of the three. In the same page size it is the slimmest and lightest, while the letters stay clear for most readers. It is not a Hafizi layout, so it is a reading Quran rather than a hifz Quran.
Choose a 16 line Quran if:
- you want a Quran for daily tilawat at home
- you want a slim copy for your bag, for travel or for Umrah (pick a small size)
- you are buying one for the whole family's use
- you already read from a 16 line copy and are used to its pages
We stock a large hard-bound copy for home, a colour-coded tajweed edition and a pocket edition:
13 line Quran: big letters, easy reading
The 13 line Quran has the most pages, about 848, and at the same page size it has the biggest letters. It is thicker, but much easier on the eyes.
Choose a 13 line Quran if:
- you are buying for your nana, nani, dada or dadi, or anyone with weak eyesight
- a young child is moving from Qaida to nazra and needs big, clear letters
- you read for long stretches and want less eye strain, especially in Ramadan
A 13 line Quran also makes a thoughtful gift for elders. We have a large size, a standard size with a zip cover, and a colour-coded tajweed edition:
Other things to check before you buy
- Tajweed colour coding. Coloured letters mark tajweed rules such as ghunna and qalqala. They are a great help for learners and children.
- Binding. Rexine hard binding is sturdy and affordable. Foam binding with a plastic cover is softer and protects the Quran better if it moves around a lot.
- Size. Pocket sizes are handy for the masjid or travel. Large sizes are better at home on a rehal.
- Translation. If you want to understand the meaning in Urdu, look at a Quran with Urdu translation instead. That is a separate format with its own layout.
- Para sets. For a madrasa beginner, a 30 sipara set lets a child carry one para at a time instead of the full Quran. See all our paras and sipara sets.
So, which one should you buy?
- For hifz: 15 line, the Hafizi Quran, in the same edition the madrasa uses.
- For daily tilawat and the family: 16 line.
- For elders, weak eyesight or young beginners: 13 line.
